Quick hits

  • It Takes Two and Split Fiction are story adventures that can only be played with two players.
  • Their Friend’s Pass lets a second player join online without buying the game.
  • Portal 2 has a separate co-op campaign with puzzles built for two.
  • Overcooked! 2 is chaotic, funny and best with good communication.
  • Check whether a game supports local split-screen, online play or both before you buy.

Playing together is one of the best parts of gaming. The games below are built around teamwork, so success depends on both players rather than one carrying the other.

It Takes Two

A story adventure about a couple on the brink of separation, transformed into tiny dolls and forced to work together. Every level introduces new abilities that only make sense as a pair. It can only be played co-op, and it won Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2021.

Split Fiction

From the same studio, Hazelight, Split Fiction follows two writers trapped in their own stories, jumping between science fiction and fantasy worlds. Like It Takes Two, it’s built entirely for two players.

Pro tip

Both Hazelight games offer a Friend’s Pass: if one player owns the game, a friend can download the pass for free and join online.

Portal 2

Alongside its single-player story, Portal 2 has a separate co-op campaign for two robots solving puzzles with portals. It rewards talking through ideas, and it’s a classic for good reason.

Overcooked! 2

Two to four players run chaotic kitchens, chopping, cooking and serving under time pressure on moving, collapsing levels. It’s hilarious and can get loud, so it’s best with players who enjoy a little chaos.

Stardew Valley

For something calmer, share a farm in Stardew Valley. Each player can focus on what they enjoy, whether that’s farming, fishing or exploring the mines. It’s also on our list of cozy games.

Unravel Two

A gentle co-op platformer in which two small yarn characters are tied together, swinging and climbing through beautiful outdoor scenes. Players can merge into one character when needed, which helps if skill levels differ.

Choosing the right game

  • Check the format: local split-screen, online or both.
  • Match the pace to both players.
  • Play in short sessions at first to see what you both enjoy.

Player questions

What’s the difference between local and online co-op?

Local co-op means playing on the same device, often with split-screen. Online co-op connects two devices over the internet, and each player usually needs their own copy.

What if one of us is much less experienced?

Choose games with forgiving checkpoints and roles that suit different skill levels, and avoid fast competitive games at first.

Do both players need an online subscription?

On consoles, online play often requires a subscription such as Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or an Xbox Game Pass membership. Check the requirements for your platform.

Are these games suitable for kids?

Some are, but ratings vary. Check the ESRB or PEGI rating; our age ratings guide explains them.

Games, platforms and settings change with updates, so check the official help pages for your platform if something looks different.
